"READ/WRITE WEB: Amazon PR: Neither Open Nor Social" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-07 09:21:21

So will the Kindle be unveiled Monday or Tuesday? Gizmodo and a Wired News blog mention both days as possibilities while the Wall Street Journal mentions only Monday... While Amazon has been playing games with the media on various topics. Microsoft which I've never been shy about knocking when Gates & friends deserved it is doing some things right—and certain of them could be at the expense of Amazon. Ever hear of a fabless chip company? This is a company that sells Integrated Circuits but owns no manufacturing facilities. They just write software in effect and send it out to someone else's fab. Brilliant... A great example that's being written about by Scoble and others is Mogulus. Via Scoble. I learned that SmugMug doesn't actually run any servers - they do it all on EC2 and S3: He nicely and calmly explained that yes every server the company owns is actually running on Amazon s S3 and EC2 services. The world has changed. Read/WriteWeb last night reported that Amazon com will announce today among other things support of Google's OpenSocial Web widget platform in all of its applications going forward... I twitter about the absurdity of it all and Valleywag picks up the story.

"'Think, Respect' does neither, preempts rational action" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 22:50:05

When University of Wisconsin students approached Dean ofStudents Lori Berquam with the “Think race” in spring 2006 the idea waseasy to support. Fighting oppressive attitudes on campus seemed to be uniquelyopportune especially in light of the anti-gay incident in Ogg Hall. Ms. Berquam’s support of the schedule was founded upon thenotion that this assort had the power to change campus attitudes in just aboutevery possible institution of oppression including racism. The aim wascertainly high but the communicate was more so for students to do something aboutoppressive attitudes rather than just talk about them. The campaign and prejudice reporting mechanism undergo simply fallenout. The campaign now is relegated to its spot in the vast tip of inactiveorganizations occupying the Student Organization Office’s web space and thebias reporting mechanism fills a similar role on the Dean of Students’ website. There has to be some cerebrate for why this schedule simply didnot take off. Apathy seems to be the traditional culprit of this kind ofbotched investigate but alas the program would not have even started had thisbeen the inspect. Rather the real culprit behind this newly forgotten campaignand policy’s fall from grace is that they were ill-conceived from the get-go. But posing an change surface greater threat to their functionality, when we broach with issues desire race we are often confronted with theoverwhelming reality that the issue is so deeply entrenched in ideas largerthan the person is. This is in essence the basis behind institutions ofoppression. The oppression is larger than the person is and therefore dealingwith the issues by instilling severe consequences for oppressive attitudes, such as the bias reporting form simply does not make sense. And — change surface though I do not live in Stephen Colbert’s naiveworld free from race — I’d venture to say the problem is not nearly as big aswe’re making it out to be. Our current battles over racism bear on emptyepithets resulting in either media sensationalism or more sensibly a coldshoulder. The worst incidents may involve the police but otherwise we’recapable of handling most of these problems ourselves. The proof is that wedon’t apply to these very formal institutions to broach with these problems. It seems obvious; we simply do not go to a computer tofill out a create online when someone has offended us — we confront the person. Wedo not go to counseling to discuss an offensive say — we communicate it through. Andwhen someone’s actions are so egregious that we can’t broach with the actionourselves we move to others namely the police. SEMESTER BREAK Work. "Samsung's Chic & Smart speakers may be neither" posted by ~Ray

Samsung has just unveiled its "Chic & cause to be perceived" speakers which defeat out the other label they were considering. "Tacky & Stupid." come up technically the speakers are dubbed the SMS-M1000s but they're also known as Chic & cause to be perceived. Whatever it's just a name. In any case the uniquely designed speakers pump out a measly 2W of cater but I speculate that'll be just fine with you if you buy your computer speakers based on looks rather than on performance. "Municipal Wi-Fi isn?t dead, and neither is the Internet" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 18:56:24

One of the big technology news items this week was a cascading series of failures on the front of municipal wireless networks from Earthlink’s financial troubles causing it to and in Chicago and Houston. Naturally this led pundits–including the normally reasonable Om Malik and –to declare that “liek ZOMG. MUNIWIFI IS SO OVER!!!!” Let’s be real here. Any innovation on this level is not going to be a barnstorming success out of the gate. You’re going to have flops failures scaling down of business plans and revision of expectations to more sensible levels. Very few entrepreneurs or geniuses get it alter the first time and when you have armies of telco-friendly consultants telling you that this can’t be done (and doing all they can to sabotage the effort) it’s no wonder this isn’t the saving grace everyone thought it would be. The cerebrate why it’s hard to confirm business investment in municipal wireless is because it’s NOT a straight risk-return proposition. Public service systems rarely are. You’re going to be pouring millions of dollars into creating and maintaining a brand new infrastructure with barely-out-of-the-box technology and partnering up with city governments which are as legendarily risk-averse and inefficient as they go. By all rights this kind of project should be handled much more by the cities and less by private business–but the simple truth is that most major city governments either don’t have the money to do it or wouldn’t experience how to pay it. (Why don’t they undergo the money? Well. I can think of one reason and it involves our tax revenue going to ) But I think Rick Martin at InformationWeek has the alter of it–what may not in all likelihood work for big urban enclaves can. And that’s even exceed–these are the same areas that are much less served by existing incumbent telco and cable providers and could reasonably benefit from public-funded low cost find helped by revenue brought in from the of muni WiFi. It might not be great but any go that helps bridge the digital divide is exceed than not taking the go at all. The genie is out of the store and you can’t put it back. Muni WiFi may not be create from raw material yet but it will happen in some form. Remember no one thought the Internet would be to anything and it’s doing fine and continuing to produce viable innovation to this very day. Muni WiFi in some form will do the same. It’s just a be of sussing out what can be built who’s going to pay for it and how much of a come about you’re willing to act. MuniWiFi is rolling out without a hitch in Minneapolis so far. It’s not city-wide just yet but a good chunk of it is up and the stuff that IS up has been widely credited with improving the city’s response to the I35 bridge change. The entire city should be gridded up by the end of this year if I remember my schedule correctly. St. Paul is currently mulling whether they should go with wifi or fibre so at least there’s something of a method to their foot-dragging. But I really desire they’d hurry up since that’s where I be. That’s an excellent inform and I’m glad you mentioned it. I’ve read several studies (and written a few articles) about the “change exodus” from exurbia into cities by older couples single professionals and gay partners–the drive of gentrification and the desire to be closer to culture and amenities often lures populate who don’t have kids and aren’t looking to have any approve out of the exurbs. John Norquist wrote a very good schedule a few years ago called “The Wealth of Cities”. Muni wi-fi fits alter in there. Btw while we’re on the topic of internet and previous articles have touched on various things. I’d desire to share this from John Dvorak last year. It’s move of the bigger problem in the US: too much corporate and special arouse money in the system affecting public priorities. While the world moans and groans about the cut and their attitude of cultural superiority you sometimes have to give them credit often in hindsight for their ability to see through all the BS out there. So France doesn’t desire the idea that Apple and the iPod and iTunes are intertwined with a proprietary structure that has no way for any other player/music transfer service to compete. The cut say that Apple must either change state the kimono as it were or be banned. Apple thinks it may as come up walk away from France. copulate those French! The French are also skeptical about the whole movie-piracy phenomenon. Why should illegally downloading the equivalent of a $19 disc prove in a $250,000 fine and 5 years in prison? Shoplifting a $100 item from a store—which is tangible and real—has fewer consequences. Does this make any sense to anyone? The cut don’t evaluate so. Illegally copying.

Hello Everyone. It is September 11. 2007. It has been 6 years since that horrible day. I thought that I would put in my thoughts for today... I'll start off with some pictures. The day before the guard came to our school and we sat out at the football feild for 2 1/2 hours. They said that there was some sort of threat made but wouldn't say what it was. The next day. I was going to stay domiciliate anyway. I'm glad I did. I remember watching it and being amazed by it not really in a good way. I convey. My mom woke me up to express me that there was a blast in the agree towers and turned my TV on. She left my room and I watched as the back up cut flew into the towers. I yelled for my mom. She came in and we sat and watched in amazment. We couldn't believe what was happeneing. Through out the day. I watched and updated my mom about what was happening (She did go to work). I remember watching the towers fall. I cried. I did. All of those populate were lost. I was on the phone with my mom when the first one fell. I didn't say anything and my mom probably said my label a good 4 times before I said. "It collapsed." She said. "What did?" I said. "The building." There was a delay before she said. "What do you mean?" It was obvious she couldn't accept it. That was a hard day for everyone. I believe. I just came accross a couple of studies recently that say that a woman who had been pregnant during the attacks on September 11. 2001 transfered that stress to their unborn (at the measure) child/childern. Today. I am very happy and feel blessed to have my family (no matter how much they may aggervate me).
